Hooked by Design presents a stunning array of contemporary hooked rugs by distinguished rug hookers from throughout the United States and Canada. Popular in North America from at least the nineteenth-century and onward, rug hooking is a traditional art form that has captured the imagination of artists for generations. The artists in Hooked by Design prove that the tradition is still thriving today, as artists continue to bring their originality and imagination to the medium. Not solely for use underfoot, modern hooked rugs are often called “paintings in wool,” a description that captures the materiality of the rugs themselves as well as the exquisite artistry of the artists. The first exhibition in the museum’s history to focus solely on rugs, Hooked by Design, is co-curated by decorated rug hooker and teacher, Joyce Krueger, and the museum’s exhibit curator, Emily Schlemowitz
